Our Celebratory Services

Take Over Sundays

St Bartholomew's Long Benton Branch celebrated Mary Sumner Day in style. The 10am service was taken over by a special service totally dedicated to Mary Sumner and the work of Mothers' Union. Our grateful thanks to Fr Ben Jarvis who worked tirelessly with us to create a wonderful service and we were honoured to have our Vice President, Diana, join us. Two new members, Joan and Pat, were admitted during the service and branch members were surprised and delighted to each receive a card made by our Junior Church children. The celebration continued in the church hall with cake and a little drop of fizz. A wonderful and memorable day.

Christ Church, North Shields Take Over service was conducted by Rev Dorothy Robinson previously Diocesan President, Jean Scott and Sue Ogden gave the talk and other members read, prepared intercessions and took the offertory. All members were present and our past members and Indoor Members were remembered in the two beautiful flower displays arranged by Dawn Meadows previously Branch Leader. Gill Robinson made the lovely cake.

The Take-Over service at service at St John's Whorlton was taken by our Chaplain Rev Anne Marr and members from Holy Nativity joined us.  Members greeted the congregation at the door and others did  the roles needed to be filled, as the service happened

Ponteland Take Over Service was lead by our vicar Revd. Capt. Paul T Allinson with all members of the branch contributing to the welcoming, the readings, the flowers, the hymns and the exhibition in the chancel. Sylvia Hickey gave an inspirational talk on the contribution that the MU and St Mary’s congregation had given both to the Christmas lunches and the Baby boxes donated to two local women’s refuges. The vicar blessed the baby box on display in the exhibition and Sylvia presented Beryl McNeil with her 50 year MU attendance certificate. Two beautiful MU cakes were then served with coffee and tea after the service.
Mothers’ Union at St Francis’ Church had ‘take over Sunday’ on 25th June. Anne and Derek Marr joined us, The service included the baptism of a little girl called Hazel.

ALL SAINTS GOSFORTH MU Takeover Sunday

At the 9.30am Parish Communion Service on June 14th, our members 'took over' nearly all of the duties. We bought the altar flowers (white, blue and yellow of course!) and two of our members had arranged them. A display (noticeboard and table) at the back of church, promoted the work of the MU globally and it's 150 yrs celebrations.

One churchwarden was a member and so were both acolytes. The intercessions, both readings and the giving out of Mary Sumner's prayer bookmarks to everyone, men included, were all covered by members and three more were singing in the choir. Not bad for a comparatively small group!...I was proud of them all.

An added bonus was the realisation that our visiting preacher on the day, the Rev'd Malcolm Railton, was also an enrolled MU member.

Our President Margy Tasker-Brown writes...

Dear friends,

What a wonderful special day we had in the Cathedral on Saturday.

After months of planning by the Core Group led by our Chaplain, an amazing time unfolded.  A huge thank you to those who detailed the service, the fabulous musicians and choir, remarkable exhibitions and refreshments.

We all appreciate your energy and hours spent on our behalf.

The 2 exhibitions that remain will be in place for another few weeks.

Thank you also to those who attended, as our WWP Kathleen says "Ordinary people doing extraordinary things and in love and fellowship".

Love Margy.

The Lord Lieutenant of Tyne and Wear posted on her Face book page:

It was an honour to attend the Mothers’ Union service at Newcastle Cathedral celebrating 150 years of ‘lighting the way for generations to come’ and the sustained impact volunteer members have made across our region within the Lieutenancies of Northumberland and Tyne & Wear. A wonderful service. The choir and  musicians were delightful. Many congratulations to staff and volunteers at Newcastle Cathedral, the members both men and women supporting their communities and the guests and supporters. ‘Let the Spirit quicken’, as Mary Sumner wrote.

Cards for the 150th Year of Mothers' Union

Download a poster

As part of our celebrations for the 150th anniversary of our wonderful organisation we have some cards and bookmarks available for sale.

It is intended that the cards and the original paintings will be featured at the Service in the Cathedral in July.

The  cards  come  in  three  designs  which  were  inspired  by the song  “Take  Me Up The Tyne  In  A  Little Boat”,  by Eric  Boswell.  Each  painting features the  “Little Boat”. The song  will  introduce  our  celebration  service.  Boats are  a feature  in the North East’s history, from coracles and ferries to trawlers and colliers. They symbolise the vulnerability of life, also our availability in faith for others

Each card is in A5 format and comes packed with an envelope. The cost per card is £!.00 minimum. The 150th anniversary logos are also featured on the inside and reverse  of the  cards.   Profits to our  local Mothers’ Union Projects.

The bookmarks also have the three designs and there is a fourth with an image of Mary Sumner with the Mary Sumner Prayer printed on each one. On the reverse is our Diocesan 150th Lantern Logo. They cost 50p each.

The cards are not yet printed so it would be useful to have an idea of the demand for them.

Thank you      Barbara Bailes
