Blue Christmas – an Advent Service
A Blue Christmas service creates a reflective, compassionate space for those who find the Christmas season difficult.
A Blue Christmas branch service has been written for a church service should clergy wish to use it.
It is important to remember that not everyone feels joyous during the Christmas season. By hosting a service like this, faith communities acknowledge and support those who find the season particularly hard, offering them a place of peace, encouragement and hope.
The service itself is very simple – some music (perhaps a mixture of carols and/or just selected verses), a poem, readings and prayers which acknowledge pain and emptiness alongside the Christian hope; accompanied by a reflection which gently speaks of light in darkness. We have provided a suggested selection to aid you in your service preparation.
