On Wednesday 5th October it was a privilege and a pleasure for West Deanery Mothers’ Union members to join St John’s Whorlton Mothers’ Union branch as they celebrated their 125 years Anniversary.
The Rev’d Matthew Hunter presided at the service of Holy Communion , and in his homily he reminded us of the initial timidity of our founder Mary Sumner in giving her first address to mothers . Even requiring her husband to speak for her.
The eventual formation of the Mothers’ Union began in 1890 and St John’s branch was formed in 1897 , just seven years later .
How wonderfully this organisation has grown in these intervening year , truly a powerful , Global force for change in the world .
We were then treated to tea , and as usual St John’s members presented us with lovely savouries , scones and cakes .
Finally the Celebration cake was shared with us all.
It was a most enjoyable occasion and a great tribute to past members , remembering all their hard work, commitment and service for those many years.
We wish them many more years to come .
